Appleton A Better Chance is a completely volunteer-based organization, with with support and select positions for the student residence and learning programs. We strive to maintain a nurturing, educational culture for our students, and only hire individuals who align fully with our mission.
Host Families – spend every other Sunday afternoon 12-7pm with one of our students. Treat them as part of your family – welcome them into your home. On long weekends (school holidays), the student can stay with the host family for the weekend.
Host Family Coordinator – help recruit host families, coordinate schedules. Recruit at any time to have host families in place by Sept. Assist with host family onboarding in Sept.
Fundraising Committee Members – work on ways to bring funds into our program. Plan events and apply for grant funds. Meet monthly, plan one large and 3-4 smaller fundraisers.
Student Affairs Committee Members – two functions: 1. monitor student academics and ensure the students are meeting academic goals 2. plan group outings and activities for the students. Meet once a month. Need one person to review grades/student progress weekly.
Recruiting Committee Members – assist with interviewing prospective students, plan visit agendas, document interviews. Recruiting happens from November through May, and we interview a total of around 20 boys. This can be done in pairs.
Recruiting Coordinator (Board Position) – coordinate recruiting efforts, lead recruiting committee, meet once a month with committee during recruiting season, attend monthly board meetings.
Secretary (Board Position) – work with the President to create and distribute agenda and minutes. Make sure student paperwork is gathered and filed. Facilitate student enrollment with the school district. Meet monthly plus communicate with board members more frequently.
Student Employment Opportunities
As part of our longstanding partnership with Lawrence University, we hire sophomore, junior, and senior students to serve as tutors for our Appleton A Better Chance scholars. We are currently seeking applications for the 2022-2023 school years.
